Discover and promote your soft skills

Soft skills have received a lot of media buzz lately. Soft skills include the interpersonal and behavioral skills, habits, and attributes that you’ve developed over the years that shape how you work. They might include leadership, teamwork, flexibility, time management, empathy, or problem-solving.

Soft skills are applicable across careers and industries but can be hard to teach. Below, we’ll share tips to help you identify and promote your soft skills. If you’re looking for a new way to put those soft skills to work, we’ll also share the latest Beyondsoft career opportunities.

Discover your soft skills

You may be asking yourself, “How do I identify my soft skills?” The answer requires a bit of self-reflection. Think about the underlying character traits and habits that you apply in your current role to help you work better, whether that’s empathy, organizational skills, or the ability to perform well under pressure. Think about the traits that have helped you accomplish your objectives. Write these down. Short on ideas? Get inspiration from this list of top soft skills.

Also, consider asking your friends, family, and coworkers what they think. You might be surprised at what may surface. For example, you might not even realize that you’re adaptable or that you have superior leadership skills.

Promote your soft skills

Once you have a solid understanding of your soft skills, it’s time to promote your soft skills on your resume and LinkedIn profile. While highlighting accomplishments matters a great deal, it’s also important to tie in your soft skills.

For example, instead of stating: “Implemented software feature that increased processing speed by 30%,” tie in the soft skill that drove this accomplishment. “Leveraged creative problem-solving to identify and implement a software feature that increased processing speed by 30%.”

Put your soft skills to work

Your soft skills set you apart and define how you work with others, approach challenges, and grow within a role. Understanding your soft skills and reflecting them on your resume can help you find new opportunities and advance your career. How to be a better ally in the workplace

Building an inclusive and respectful workplace culture benefits everyone. One of the best ways we can help foster this culture is through allyship. Being an ally means actively supporting the rights of a marginalized group. This article highlights actions each of us can take to be a better ally in the workplace.

Educate yourself

As the saying goes, you can’t know what you don’t know. As allies, we must commit to identifying and mitigating our own knowledge gaps by learning about privilege, bias, and identity. This means seeking out others’ stories to gain insight into their world and their challenges. Additionally, we must ask ourselves tough questions to identify our own blind spots and then hold ourselves accountable for addressing them through learning.

Exercise empathy

The ability to understand and share the feelings of another person can make us better allies. Practicing empathy helps us feel more connected to others. As part of the education process, we must learn about perspectives that differ from our own. We must challenge our viewpoints and attitudes and exercise humility as we seek to understand others. Furthermore, we can practice active listening, giving the speaker our undivided attention and asking for clarification when needed.

Practice respect

Practicing respect means treating people with courtesy and kindness and honoring others’ identities, opinions, and concerns through verbal and nonverbal communication. We can encourage praise and recognition and ensure criticism is constructive and comes from a place of kindness and empathy. Additionally, practicing respect means using others’ preferred pronouns and avoiding assumptions around gender identity. We can make it easy for others when we add our own preferred pronouns to our email signature, introductions, or online bios.

Foster inclusion

To be a better ally in the workplace, make sure everyone has a seat at the table by ensuring meetings, events, projects, and conversations are inclusive. Actively encourage all attendees to express their views and ideas.

Speak up

Speaking up means standing up for what is right. But it doesn’t mean we speak for others. One of the best things we can do is to give a platform and voice to others. Create space to allow people to speak for themselves. Take time to amplify and promote underheard voices and give credit where credit is due. When you see something wrong, take action. If you hear a comment or observe behavior that might be offensive, speak up and explain why it is wrong and will not be tolerated.

Beyondsoft values a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture

Simple strategies to find a job you love

There’s been a lot of talk about the Great Resignation, a term that describes an uptick in employees changing roles in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. But did you know that up to 70% of people have Great Resignation regrets? To find a job you love, it’s important to nail down exactly what you’re looking for. In this article, explore some key strategies to help you find a job you love. Plus, I’ll share some of the latest Beyondsoft career opportunities—just in case you’re ready to make the leap to a fantastic global company.

Evaluate what’s truly important

While it may seem obvious, knowing exactly what you’re looking for in your next job will help you make the best decision possible. So first, it’s important to make a list of the aspects you love about your current role. These things might include responsibilities, such as project oversight or cross-team collaboration.

Additionally, consider what you appreciate about the company itself, such as its size, your connection to the company’s values, or a vibrant company culture.

Next, list the additional things that you want from your next role. Perhaps you’re seeking new or expanded responsibilities or you’d like to learn a new technology. Maybe you’d like a role with greater flexibility or expanded growth opportunities. Whatever these factors are, write them down.

Finally, combine these lists and reorder them, with the highest priorities at the top. This exercise will give you a much clearer sense of your ideal company and job and the qualities that appeal most to you.

Ask the right questions

Now that you have narrowed down the qualities of your ideal job and company, it’s time to develop questions to help you evaluate roles more objectively. Bonus points for geeking out and creating a spreadsheet!

Questions you might ask about company culture in advance of an interview include:

  • What are your contacts and others saying about the company culture?
  • How does the company support advancement?
  • What are the company’s views on diversity and inclusion, sustainability, and giving back to the community?

Questions to ask an interviewer might include:

  • What makes you most excited about coming to work?
  • What learning and mentorship opportunities does the company offer?
  • What is the company’s approach to mental health and helping employees preserve work-life balance?
  • How much autonomy would I have?

If you’re looking to expand your income and benefits, be sure you understand what you’re being offered—and do your best to get it in writing. For example, while the income may be on target, you also need to consider other benefits:

  • Does the company offer a 401K match?
  • How are annual bonuses and pay increases calculated?
  • What are the healthcare benefits, and what portion does the company pay?

Do your homework to find a job you love

Whether you’re seeking growth opportunities, greater flexibility, or a more fulfilling role, doing your homework upfront will help you find a job you love and prevent any Great Resignation regrets. So, make sure you know why you’re leaving and what’s most important to you. Then, ask the right questions to ensure you’re making the right move.

3 job interview mistakes you might not know you’re making

When heading to a job interview—whether virtual or in-person—you want to put your best foot forward. Most people know that arriving late, being rude, and misrepresenting qualifications and job history can spell disaster. But what about the job interview mistakes you might not know you’re making?

In this article, we’ll cover some of the lesser-known interview missteps to help you polish your presentation. Plus, we’ll explore some of Beyondsoft’s latest career opportunities.

1. Displaying negative body language

Communication isn’t always about what you say. Nonverbal cues—the way you listen, look, move, and react—can make or break an interview. So, you’ll want to ensure your body language reinforces your words rather than detracting from or undermining them.

You want to appear relaxed, confident, and open to new ideas and experiences during an interview. Therefore, avoid crossing your arms, fidgeting, slouching, or failing to make eye contact. These non-verbal cues can give the impression you’re closed off, bored, unprofessional, or even untrustworthy. To uncover your personal trouble spots, ask a friend to assess your habitual posture and movements, and then practice using non-verbal communication effectively before your interview.

2. Using the wrong words

Silence can feel awkward, but a thoughtful pause or asking a question will serve you far better than plodding forward with “um” or trailing off with “whatever.” The fact is that these filler words can make you appear unpolished or dismissive. So strike them from your interview vocabulary.

Other words you should nix include buzzwords that no longer buzz and negative words such as “hate,” “don’t,” “can’t,” and “no.” Hiring managers are tired of hearing about “dedicated, hard-working, motivated perfectionists” and don’t want to hire someone who might have a negative attitude. Instead, focus on using positive words and expressions employers want to hear, and talk about the unique skills and attributes that set you apart. Record yourself rehearsing interview responses to see where you might make improvements.

3. Not listening well

We’ve talked about this before in 4 tips to help you nail your next conversational interview, but it’s worth touching on again. Sometimes, interviewees get nervous and are so busy thinking about answering the question that they forget to actively listen. Active listening means being fully present and engaged with the person speaking. It allows you to build a deeper connection and ensures you pick up on subtle cues you’d otherwise miss. In addition, it positions you to share relevant experiences and ask insightful questions.

Eliminate these three mistakes to present with greater polish and ease at your next interview. If you’re ready to put your interview skills into practice, check out the latest career openings at Beyondsoft.

Meet Rachel Warren

Welcome back for another month’s Employee Spotlight. For those of you new to this, we choose a Beyondsoft employee and ask them questions about their role in the company, as well as a few “just for fun” questions, so our readers get the chance to learn more about the incredible people who make up our team. This month, we are featuring a member of our recruiting team! Meet Rachel Warren!

Marketing: Hi Rachel, thanks for agreeing to be this month’s spotlight! How long have you been with Beyondsoft? What does your role entail?

Rachel: Hi! I’ve been here since July of 2019. As the Corporate Recruiter, I handle all corporate hiring and oversee/maintain our Applicant Tracking System iCIMS and other recruiting tools/processes for all company staffing. I also get to work on many HR projects outside of recruiting.

Marketing: What do you like most about your job? Is there a unique (or fun) project you’ve been working on that you can talk about?

Rachel: First and foremost, I love my team (shoutout to the best HR team in the game!). I also love the flexibility to work on projects that I find professionally fulfilling, like the DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) program, which I am now running (keep your eyes peeled this year for more DEI initiatives).

Marketing: We can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeves! What advice would you give to recent new hires?

Rachel: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and take notes! I still sometimes reference notes I took during my first week of work.

Marketing: Do you work in-office or remote? What are your biggest productivity tips for that environment?

Rachel: I work remotely for the time being and have been for a vast majority of my tenure at BCI (I started just six months before the first COVID case in the US…and happen to live in the same city where that case occurred). Working remotely is not for everyone, but I love it! My best productivity tip is to have a routine, make yourself an excellent area to work from, and TAKE BREAKS!

Marketing: If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you?

Rachel:  Hmmm, well, I look nothing like her, and I’m not British, but Emily Blunt was the first name that popped in my head…I love her sense of humor!

Marketing: What is your philosophy?

Rachel: Kindness, respect, common sense, and laughter rule all.

Marketing: Not a bad philosophy. What do you like to do in your spare time? What is something you’re good at? Is there something you’re terrible at (that you feel comfortable sharing, of course!)

Rachel: I’m a pretty laid-back gal. In my spare time, I love just being with my friends and family, and I’ve lived in the Pacific NW all my life, so any time there’s sunshine, you’ll find me outside!

Marketing: Are you messy or organized?

Rachel: ORGANIZED! I can tell you where every item I own is at this very moment. It’s a problem, actually, haha.

Marketing: What books are at your bedside?

Rachel: I’ve got two right now – The Storyteller by Dave Grohl and The Book of Hope by Jane Goodall and Douglas Abrams.

Marketing: Recommendation time: Is there anything you currently love and want to share? This can be a podcast, book, tv show, music, activity – you name it!

Rachel: I just discovered After Life with Ricky Gervais (on Netflix), and I think it’s a beautiful commentary about humanity, love, and grief – all set to laughter! Otherwise, you’ll find me watching Schitt’s Creek or Ted Lasso on an unending loop.

Thanks for letting us get to know more about you, Rachel!

4 tactics to fuel a growth mindset and expand your potential

Do you believe intelligence, talent, and other personal attributes are innate, fixed qualities? Or can hard work plus an appetite for learning improve performance?

How you answer these questions marks the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset—a distinction that can influence the trajectory of your career. To summarize, a growth mindset is the conviction that one’s talent, skills, and intelligence can be increased through time and effort. A fixed mindset is the belief that such attributes are innate and cannot be changed.

Put the power of a growth mindset in your corner with these four tactics. Ready to exercise your growth mindset in a new role? Check out the latest career opportunities at Beyondsoft, listed below.

1. Embrace the power of yet

Just because you don’t learn something quickly doesn’t mean it can’t be learned. In fact, mastering a new skill can be a struggle, requiring persistent effort and resilience. A person with a fixed mindset might say, “I don’t know that,” and give up. But a person with a growth mindset will say, “I don’t know that…yet,” and press on, believing in their ability to learn. That’s the power of yet.

2. Challenge yourself to reach beyond your limits

When you hit the breaking point of your personal limits, your mindset determines whether you push harder or give up. Learning to view challenges as opportunities to grow rather than roadblocks is essential to expanding your potential. Personal growth requires pushing past your comfort zone regularly. Seek out challenges that expose you to the risk of failure, and realize that if you never fail, you’re probably not challenging yourself. In fact, some of the world’s most successful people use failure as a springboard to success.

3. Become a lifetime learner

Fuel a growth mindset by integrating learning into your lifestyle. Start with your goals and go from there. Interested in taking on a more challenging role or making a career shift? Look at the skills required for the job you want and create a plan. Talk to your manager about training opportunities or stretch projects. Find and take an online course in your spare time. You can even dive into a side project.

And let’s not forget about books. Turns out that 85% of successful people read at least two educational books every month. In fact, Bill Gates reads a book every week.

4. Be open to feedback

Growth-oriented individuals embrace feedback and criticism. While those with a fixed mindset might get defensive, those with a growth mindset use feedback and criticism to learn and grow their skills.

Don’t wait to get feedback: actively seek it out. Use feedback from credible sources like your manager, colleagues, even your customers to help you make improvements. Then, apply the information you’ve gained to cultivate and refine the skills and qualities you desire.

Fueling a growth mindset can help you achieve your goals and excel in your career. If you’re ready to put that growth mindset to work, check out the latest career opportunities at Beyondsoft.

Accelerate career growth with three New Year’s resolutions

The chance to reset greets us each morning, so if you missed making your resolutions on New Year’s Eve, never fear. Plenty of opportunity remains for you in 2022—especially if you’re looking to accelerate career growth. Make these three resolutions to supercharge your career—and be sure to check out our latest career opportunities to see if one might be the ideal fit for you.

Resolution #1: Set SMART goals

Start by resolving to put your goals in writing. Advice you’ve heard before, right? For good reason: studies show that those who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them.

But don’t just jot down any old goals. Instead, set SMART goals: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. SMART goals help you avoid unrealistic, vague goals and force you to answer critical questions that define your path forward and the actions you need to take.

In fact, some time-management professionals advocate for SMARTER goals, adding “evaluated” and “reviewed” to the list. These additions reflect the importance of efficacy and feedback. After all, reviews aren’t just for restaurants and online purchases. So, as you build your SMART goals, take stock of your latest performance reviews, and be honest with yourself. To help you get started, use this outline to set the SMART (or SMARTER!) goals you need to accelerate career growth.

Resolution #2: Find a mentor

Once you’ve outlined your goals, you needn’t go it alone. Find a mentor to help you along the way. Mentors provide an objective view of your career, help identify blind spots, clarify your strengths, and supply invaluable insights based on their own experience and career trajectory. In fact, 75% of executives consider mentorship critical to professional success.

Mentorship becomes more meaningful when you have a career goal in mind. So, use your SMART goals to help inform what you need from a mentor and then make a list of these requirements and expectations. To find a mentor, identify people in your network who have achieved success in fields you want to work in. Then, be prepared to schedule a meeting to explain why you’re seeking mentorship and why you’ve chosen them.

Resolution #3: Fuel a growth mindset

Settling into a work routine can enable efficiency. But to advance your career, you’ll need to challenge yourself. Consider seeking stretch projects at work. Stretch projects can help you deepen your core expertise, acquire new skills, and gain exposure across the workplace. Of course, not every stretch project will provide the growth and opportunity you’re seeking. Make sure the project aligns with your SMART goals. You can also review 4 Rules for Accepting a Stretch Assignment to help you determine if a project makes sense for you.

Additionally, make growth and learning a habit. Carve out time each week for ongoing learning, whether conferences, certification courses, evening classes, or even industry books, to help you achieve your SMART goals. Just one hour a week can make a big difference!

Now that you’ve resolved to accelerate your career, be sure to explore the latest career opportunities at Beyondsoft. Who knows? You might find the perfect fit for your new SMART career goals!

4 tips to help you nail your next conversational interview

If you’re busy updating your LinkedIn profile and applying to companies you’d love to work for, chances are good you’re also preparing answers to potential interview questions. While it’s important to have ready answers to inquiries about your strengths, qualifications, and the like, increasingly recruiters have replaced the traditional question-and-answer job interview with a more relaxed approach. The conversational interview not only gives recruiters a chance to get to know you better, it gives you the opportunity to ask lots of questions and determine if the job, corporate values, and culture are the right fit for you.

While typically less stressful than responding to a barrage of questions, a conversational interview also means you can’t rely solely upon rehearsed answers. But that doesn’t mean you can’t prepare. Use the tips below to shine in your next interview while getting the details you need to make a well-informed decision about your next role. Plus, keep reading to explore the latest job opportunities at Beyondsoft.

1. Master the art of active listening

Engage in the conversation through active, attentive listening. This involves asking questions, summarizing what you hear, and most importantly, being fully present. All too often nervous candidates become absorbed in planning responses while the interviewer speaks and miss opportunities to ask important questions about the job or work culture, clarify subtle points, share relevant experience, and build a stronger, more memorable connection. To prepare for a conversational interview, take time to exercise active listening with everyone you interact with. You’ll not only improve your listening skills, you’ll enrich your existing relationships.

2. Do your research

When preparing for your interview, take time to explore the company’s culture, mission and values as well as their key players, recent events, and clientele. Visit the company’s website and look online for recent news articles. Explore their social media pages. Reach out to contacts who work at the company to ask questions. By doing your research, you’ll not only demonstrate your knowledge of the company, you’ll have the ability to ask more meaningful questions.

3. Bring your questions

Remember that during an interview, the company is not only vetting you as a potential hire, you’re vetting them as a potential employer. As you research, jot down relevant questions such as: what are the company’s current goals? Would your role be primarily collaborative or would you work independently? What kind of mentorship and growth opportunities does the company offer? Ask your questions throughout the course of the interview–don’t save them until the end. And don’t hesitate to ask for more information or clarifications.

4. Be optimistic–and be yourself

Approaching the process with optimism and authenticity helps ensure a more positive and memorable experience for everyone. Exercise your active listening skills and curiosity during your conversation. Try to relax and be yourself by sharing your unique perspective and examples from your own experience. Giving your interviewer the opportunity to picture you in the role will increase your chances of finding a role that is truly suited for you.

We hope these tips help you have a more productive and engaging interview. And since you’re here, check out the latest sales and technical career openings at Beyondsoft. Three tips to make your LinkedIn profile stand out

Did you know that four people are hired on LinkedIn every minute? With nearly 800 million members and 57 million listed companies, LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network. It provides not only opportunities to highlight your own skills, but it helps you network with people around the globe and connect to job opportunities.

But with so many members, how can you make your LinkedIn profile stand out? Here are three tips to help you put your best (virtual) foot forward. And be sure to keep reading to learn about some of the latest career opportunities with Beyondsoft.

1. Choose quality photos for your LinkedIn profile and banner

Your image is the first thing recruiters and contacts notice about your profile, so you want to make a good impression. For your profile photo, choose an up-to-date, high-resolution headshot. Your picture should represent how you look day-to-day. Clothes with solid colors typically look better, as do uncluttered backgrounds. Avoid using a cropped group photo where a stray hand might be visible. And one more thing? Smile!

Don’t forget about your banner photo. Your banner is a great way to personalize your profile with an eye-catching image that showcases who you are and your professional identity. It could be your product, your customers, your mission, or just something unique about you. As with your profile photo, use a high-resolution image.

2. Create an engaging LinkedIn headline and about section

Many people focus on their experience section, but then neglect their LinkedIn headline and about section. So let’s start with the headline, which appears directly beneath your name. It’s designed for more than just your job title and company. Update your headline to reflect your professional identity. Include keywords and phrases that you want to be found for and share something about yourself that makes you unique.

The good news is that you’ve got 120 characters to use. Use commas or vertical bars to separate phrases. So instead of “Sales Manager, XYZ Manufacturing,” go with something like “Customer-obsessed sales manager, innovator & mentor | Creating business value through cloud-based solutions.”

The about section is the place where your connections get to know you. It’s the ideal place to share your personal mission and work goals and the value you bring to the table. It’s where you can spotlight important skills and the accomplishments you’re most proud of. Be sure to incorporate the keywords that you want to be found for. Always write the about section in first-person and let your voice shine through to help personalize your profile. You’ve got 2,000 characters to spend, so make them count.

3. Beef up your LinkedIn recommendations

Just like an Amazon review, people look at recommendations from others you’ve worked with to validate your skills. So acquiring quality recommendations is essential. Ideally, you should continue compiling recommendations throughout your career, not just when you’re looking for a job. In addition to colleagues and managers, consider asking people you’ve managed, clients, mentors, and others that you’ve collaborated with to recommend you.

Thankfully, LinkedIn makes it easy to request a recommendation within the tool, although you still want to personalize your request. It’s helpful to remind colleagues of a particular project or workstream where you worked together. You can even ask them to vouch for specific skillsets that you are hoping to highlight. Also, always return the favor by offering to write them a recommendation.

Obviously, there’s much more to making your LinkedIn profile stand out, but these are a great place to start. Still searching for the right career fit? Check out the latest sales and technical career openings at Beyondsoft.

Make your next virtual interview a breeze with these 5 tips

Got a virtual interview lined up? You’re not alone. The global health pandemic has given rise to organizations incorporating technologies such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams to facilitate internal collaboration as well as enable recruiting efforts. According to a Gartner poll, 86% of organizations are foregoing traditional face-to-face meetings in favor of video-based, virtual interviews.

But tech issues and other distractions can quickly derail discussions. Thankfully, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are five tips to help ensure your next virtual interview goes smoothly. Be sure to check out career openings at Beyondsoft, with our latest opportunities listed below.

1. Download and test the tech in advance

These days, there are plenty of virtual meeting options available, often requiring a download. Make sure the program is working properly on your device well in advance of your interview. Test your speakers, microphone, and camera. Locate controls such as volume, mute, chat, and screen sharing to ensure you look like a pro. And don’t forget to practice sharing content on your screen to impress your interviewer with work samples.

2. Dress to impress

While some interviewers may forego the camera, chances are you’ll be on screen and you’ll want to put your best foot forward. Wear the same attire as you would during an in-person interview.

3. Choose your backdrop

Make sure that the space behind you is tidy to ensure that the interviewer focuses on you and not, say, the dirty dishes on your counter. Ensure that your space is well lityou can always bring in a lamp. Do a dry run with your laptop’s camera—you might be surprised at the items in your background that can look distracting.

4. Limit distractions

Speaking of distractions, whether you have a dog or children or noisy neighbors, find ways to minimize sounds and interruptions. Silence your cell phone, turn off IM alerts, close the blinds—do whatever you need to ensure a distraction-free experience. Consider using noise-cancelling headphones. This helps you as well as your interviewer to stay focused on the interview and not your dog chewing on a squeaky toy.

5. Get set up early

Get ready 30 minutes in advance. Close down emails and internet browsers. Pull up any files you want to have handy. And make sure your computer is up to date. There’s nothing more frustrating than when an unforeseen update puts an abrupt end to your call. Sharing your screen? Make sure your background image is appropriate.

Good luck with that next virtual interview! Still searching for the right career fit? Check out the latest sales and technical career openings at Beyondsoft.
