Data migration to Hadoop delivers 80% cost savings while improving performance for bank

THE CHALLENGE

To reduce costs, our financial customer needed to migrate all their business and banking data from Teradata to Hadoop. But the data to be migrated was extremely sensitive and essential for daily business activities, which meant the migration needed to be highly secure with no downtime. To add to the complexity, the data came from multiple banking sectors such as financial data, loans, credit cards, and consumer banking, each with its unique migration challenges. Our customer needed a technology partner that could handle these challenges and complete the data migration in just 18 months.

THE SOLUTION

Beyondsoft was chosen to plan and implement the migration from Teradata to Hadoop. Initially, our customer had estimated the scope of the migration to be 2,000 tables with 2,800 objects. However, once Beyondsoft initiated the work, we found they had inadvertently miscalculated and that there were actually 6,000 objects, making the 18-month project timeline even more challenging.

Additionally, because the migration source and destination were very different, to avoid data and functionality issues, Beyondsoft needed to redefine the data architecture. By redesigning the architecture to accommodate the destination format, Beyondsoft achieved performance improvements and complied with end-user requirements.

Furthermore, to avoid disrupting any services that were dependent upon the data, Beyondsoft worked with the customer to create a prioritization plan for the migration, starting with the most frequently used data first and ending with infrequently used data. Throughout the project, Beyondsoft ensured that more than 100 user entities who required data did not see any downtime, even when occasional issues were encountered.

The redesigned Hadoop architecture
THE RESULTS

The data migration was a resounding success, delivering the following benefits to our customer:

  • Migration from Teradata to Hadoop with no downtime.

Bank saves money and boosts efficiency by migrating to a modern unified data platform

THE CHALLENGE

Our customer had been using the Business Intelligence Platform on Teradata to host sensitive data that was regularly accessed and updated by third-party vendors. But the platform’s limited monitoring capabilities were difficult to manage and did not meet the bank’s growing needs. Meanwhile, the solution had become cost prohibitive. To save money and meet their business requirements, the customer needed to migrate from the legacy platform to a modern unified data platform.

THE SOLUTION

In addition to migrating more than 1,000 highly sensitive datasets, Beyondsoft migrated 23 regulatory reporting functions onto the modern unified data platform. To expedite project delivery and validate data accuracy, Beyondsoft built an automated tool that compared the datasets moved from the legacy platform to the target platform. The Beyondsoft team chose a third-party tool to convert Teradata SQL to Sparkola SQL, further expediting the project. To enable secure user access on the new platform, Beyondsoft designed a custom access control system based on a proprietary tool our customer had built on top of Spark.

Due to the sensitive, business-critical nature of the data and systems as well as regulatory guidelines, Beyondsoft followed strict protocols for the deployment and developed plans to manage capacity, data involvement, and other conflicts. Additionally, the team developed systematic plans for migrating data that was heavily dependent upon other systems while contending with a continuously evolving system during the migration. Finally, Beyondsoft sanitized the customer’s environment, resolving 120 critical issues.

Reusable CDN testing and migration solution cuts workload in half while saving $70K

THE CHALLENGE

Our customer needed to test and validate a massive migration of more than 50,000 web pages across 250 domains from their content delivery network (CDN) to another platform. The CDN testing and migration solution had to be thorough and precise due to the sensitive nature of the content and the massive scope of the effort. Furthermore, the solution needed robust, automated reporting capabilities and be reusable for future projects.

THE SOLUTION

To meet the customer’s requirements, Beyondsoft developed an automated tool to perform comparisons of link redirects, static content, HAR files, MD5, and pre- and post-migration content screenshots. The tool generates HTML reports with scores for each web page comparison. For mobile application pages, the tool uses API calls that are triggered for comparing pre-login calls. Due to the sheer volume of test candidates, the tool leverages separate docker containers for testing each pair of new and existing domains.

Additionally, to comply with the customer’s acceptance criteria, Beyondsoft delivered test strategy documentation, insights around the reusability level of the automated tool, crawler scripts and documentation around their accuracy, and proof of the tool’s ability to test multiple languages.

Implementing the CDN testing and migration solution

To ensure future reusability, Beyondsoft built a simple, straightforward, and modular process. The automated tool takes inputs in the form of new domains. It then checks for existing screenshots and HAR files. If the files don’t exist, it runs a crawler to get the files. If the files do exist, the automated tool starts the comparison process. To ensure the accuracy and quality of the results, the automated testing tool is designed to perform multiple passes. Upon completion, it generates a report with scores for each test type.

The biggest implementation challenge was ensuring the tool could handle multiple aspects of testing without failure. Today this tool can be used for any future CDN migrations. The tool is extremely versatile and can be adjusted to the specific needs of any client.

Beyondsoft DMaaS solution secures & automates data management for Singapore-based bank

THE CHALLENGE

Our customer needed an automated DMaaS solution to secure and safely move massive volumes of highly sensitive data from on-premises servers to a cloud storage solution. They also wanted to ensure they could tokenize sensitive data and share it between different environments.

But their existing manual processes were insecure and time-consuming and put them at high risk for human error. Furthermore, they needed a solution that would comply with rigorous government regulations as well as company policies.

THE SOLUTION

Beyondsoft implemented a full data movement as a service (DMaaS) solution for the customer. As part of the DMaaS solution, Beyondsoft secured sensitive data using tokenization and automated processes to quickly and securely move data to the cloud and different environments such as user acceptance testing, production, and quality assurance.

To ensure a highly secure and compliant solution that could handle massive data volumes, Beyondsoft first conducted an in-depth analysis of the customers’ business needs and existing environment and chose technologies that could fully meet project requirements.

Beyondsoft then designed a tokenization tool that requires only a handful of inputs, such as the data to be copied and the data destination. Once the inputs are specified, the tokenized data is automatically moved to its destination with a single click.

To further improve the security of the entire process, once the data is tokenized, it is scanned and sent to a manager for review and approval before the actual transfer. This approval process adds an extra layer of security and provides our customer with greater control over the data transfer process.

Insurance group leverages DevOps framework & AWS to up-level application quality

THE CHALLENGE

Faced with policy updates and website changes, Tokio Marine felt the time had come to embrace a DevOps framework and leverage the latest technology for two business-critical, customer-facing applications. Up until then, implementing software updates and features was highly manual, requiring an extended timeframe. Stability and quality issues were impacting the customer experience. Tokio Marine needed a streamlined, automated continuous delivery framework to expedite time to market for application updates and increase the quality and stability of production code.

THE SOLUTION

Tokio Marine turned to Beyondsoft. Within five months, Beyondsoft had migrated both applications to agile, AWS technology and had established an automated DevOps framework.

To take advantage of serverless compute and automated provisioning capabilities, Beyondsoft moved their brokerage application from ECS to AWS Lambda. The move enabled developers to use the AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) tool to provision AWS CodeCommit pipelines for continuous and automated code delivery as well as leverage integrated tools such as AWS CodePipeline and AWS CodeBuild. Beyondsoft moved their online payment application from EC2 to Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS). By migrating to EKS, pods and nodes are managed automatically.

Beyondsoft also built a custom framework shared by both products to automatically provision code, generating a CodeBuild/CodePipeline process based upon developer CodeCommits. When a developer updates code, the framework automatically compiles the code, validates quality, and deploys the code to the Lambda development environment. From there VeraCode validates the Code Run Time Security Check Once it passes, the code gets deployed to UAT where test cases are run, followed by regression testing using Blaze Meter. Once the code passes these steps, it deploys to production.

RESULTS

  • Increased product quality: By drastically reducing the number of defects introduced into production, product quality and stability have improved substantially.
  • Accelerated product delivery: Continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) ensures updates and features get deployed rapidly.
  • Improved customer experience: Improved application quality and stability and the ability to introduce new product features rapidly has elevated the customer experience.
  • Greater operational efficiency: Thanks to automation, updating code has gone from 3-4 hours to just 10 minutes, substantially reducing the strain on developers.
